Are you sure you didn't use your Linux box as your smtp server with
something like this:
<smtp_server>localhost.localdomain</smtp_server>
I'm not sure Google is going to be happy as your relay.

What happens when you just use the mail command at the command line
on your Linux box; something like:
mail me@xxxxxxxxxxx
